I've installed VB6 on my old Win 2k laptop for my son to play with

If I put any controls other than a control button (or one or two others) on a form the whole IDE crashes when I run it

Any ideas?

Install the latest Visual Studio 6 Service Pack.

Looks like some problems with Runtime DLLs not registered properly.
