I have a client that wants a combination classified site & community site so I am looking into forum software and was wondering if any of y'all had experience with any certain packages (for better or worse). I might just roll my own since it shouldn't be anything too big, but no sense in reinventing the wheel.

so, have any .net forum software experience?

That looks pretty good, I also found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PunBB.NET

and in writing this post I realized I should check with the host (well thats assuming the client stays with me hosting) to see if they already have something.

The more i think about it though, the more I think I will just home grow something... still trying to get my head around a combination classified site & community site.

What do they exactly mean by a classified site and a community site?

In my office we have a Intranet site which you must be a part of our company net to access, and an Internet site that is accessed via the public and there is no crossing between.

Or are they saying that they want a security on certain boards, like we have here?

lol I made a bad choice of words given your military back ground  laugh1

I meant classified as in like advertisements, e.g. "pass me the classifieds, I'm gonna look for a job"

I found this the other day and it looks interesting, I think I'm going to install it and see how it handles (even though I think I scared the client away  mf_Dr_Evil ):

Ah I understand they want a site with ads and one for a community discussion area. Kind of like http://www.toytowngermany.com/ (site for Expatriates in Germany). They have a news area, discussion area, and also a way to post ads for services.

Yup something like that. Out of curiosity and offtopicness, how much would you quote someone to build that, if that was your only gig.

The application I made for my wife's midwife group earned me 1000 Euros for the initial work. I get paid for updates and changes.

What about DotNetNuke? It's got some pretty good stuff built into it.

Maybe not. It was my first Freelance and originally was a charity case. The thing was is that they felt they needed to get rid of some money so that they could write it off on taxes and so paid me when I really wasn't expecting it. I probably could have asked for more, just didn't know how much this kind of thing would cost. I told them I spent about 100 hours building it.

Yeah, if 100 hours at my current rate then I wouldn't be that far off from what I bid. If I don't get a reply back (and haven't taken on another project) in a week then I'll drop my price a bit.
