Our developer in Aussieland is looking at changing their development environment to VS2008. So for this they are thinking of changing their installation method to use Windows Installer (since this is a built-in feature of VS2008). So I need to give my boss some advice on this. I know that Microsoft has its WiX tool kit (votive?) released as open source (download at SourceForge). So my question is this does VS2008 just use WiX core tools to build the MSI files?

The reason I'm asking this is simple. We have to do a minor change to a file before it is wrapped up in the installer so they don't send us prebuilt install files they send us the raw binaries and the scripts to build the installer (currently InstallShield 12). We encode the EXE and replace theirs with this encoded one and then build the installer. I think my company would want to use the cheaper way of handling this. IF it is possible to use the WiX tool kit I kind of have to inform my boss so he makes the sounder decision (even if down in my heart I would love to have the company buy me a full license for VS2008 Standard).

I believe the exes used by WiX are light.exe, candle.exe, wick.exe or something along those lines. Basically the idea is candles and light. Could one of you users of the full product let me know?

If you are using VS2008 Standard you could do a check for the light.exe, candle.exe, dark.exe in your installation files. According to Microsoft it is already there so even if you don't use it the files would be there.

Cool Wrack. Thanks ... Hmm I guess MS has multiple ways of generating MSI files.

I would plug in the external drive and then try to delete.  Windows "lost" where the files are located probably after your formatted the hard drive.
